The Chancellor is in charge of Her Majesty’s Treasury – the Government department tasked with looking after the public purse.
Each Government department is responsible for a particular area – for example, the Department for Education and the Department of Health. The Treasury decides how much each department should receive so that it can carry out its jobs.
The Chancellor also determines how much we should all pay in taxes in order to pay for our public services.
